JONES AND JOUBERT
“Jones” and “Joubert” were the lead pair of the gun from J. Battery RHA that fired the first shell of the First World War. The pair survived the War, in harness together throughout, and did not return home until after the Armistice. In November 1919 they returned to their pre war home in Aldershot and were let loose on the square to see where they would go. They made straight for the stables they had occupied before they deployed.
The last time these two horses were on parade was at the unveiling of the Gunner Memorial at Hyde Park Corner in October 1925, after which they retired together.
The Royal British Legion candle has shone for the one hour of “lights out” on August 4th 2014 to commemorate the Centenary of the start of World War One.
This candle must never be relit or replaced.
The hundred hand made poppies are a tribute to Paul Cummins art installation “Blood swept lands and seas of red” exhibited at the Tower of London.
As a Bombardier in the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery it was an honour to carry the casket of “Flanders Soil”. In doing so, the significance of the fallen horses and the survival of “Jones and Joubert“ makes me extremely proud of the Regiment in whom I served.
